Hudson, NY (February 11, 2020) – The National Young Farmers Coalition, in partnership with the Local Food Safety Collaborative and with funding from the FDA, introduces a brand new produce safety resource for young farmers, “A Small Farmer’s Practical Guide to Food Safety.”
This 137-page guidebook aims to help small and beginning growers understand the Food Safety Modernization Act’s Produce Safety Rule, and to generally make the food they offer to their communities safer.
This guidebook and the accompanying online resource library are not exhaustive instructions on how to legally comply with the Produce Safety Rule, but are meant to equip growers with the basics to improve food safety on their farm: training agendas, template standard operating procedures (SOPs), specific options for wildlife management, suggestions for how to set up a washing station, and much more.
The National Young Farmers Coalition’s Business Services Director, Cara Fraver, says, “For years, we’ve tried to find specific, implementable examples of how young farmers can reduce risk and improve their practices. This guidebook and its online resource library, strive to provide some tangible answers to how to improve food safety on a small farm.”
The online resource library and guidebook are free and available on our website, www.youngfarmers.org
The National Young Farmers Coalition (Young Farmers) is a national advocacy network of young farmers fighting for the future of agriculture. Visit Young Farmers on the web at www.youngfarmers.org, and on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Instagram.
