Young Farmers seeks a Land Campaign Organizer to mobilize young farmers and ranchers across the country to advocate for justice-centered land policy change. As a policy advocacy organization, the Coalition is primarily focused on designing, implementing, and cultivating young farmer leadership to win legislative campaigns and drive progressive systemic policy change. We do this by pairing grassroots action with grasstops government relations; working in coalition with diverse partners; and training young farmers to be leaders in this movement. Our land campaign is about engaging farmers, supporters, partners, and policymakers to enact policy change at all levels of government that centers justice and demands sustainable access to land for growers.
The Organizer will work closely with the Land Campaign Director and organizing staff at the Coalition to support all aspects of the campaign—including coalition building, messaging, policy advocacy, and fundraising—with a focus on grassroots engagement. This work will center BIPOC-led organizations and farmers, with the goal of raising public awareness of the land-related challenges young farmers face, engaging farmers in telling their stories, and changing policy. The Organizer will report to the Land Campaign Director (based in New York) and will work remotely, with travel a future possibility.

The National Young Farmers Coalition (Young Farmers) represents, mobilizes, and engages young farmers to ensure their success. Since our founding in 2010, we have grown our grassroots network to over 200,000 farmers, ranchers, and supporters. We give young farmers tools to become leaders in their communities, building an effective political voice at the local, state, and national level.
Together, we tackle the most critical structural and economic barriers that prevent motivated young people from starting and growing successful farm businesses—including access to affordable farmland, racial inequities, climate change, health care, and student debt. We have won historic investments in beginning farmer training, outreach to farmers of color, farmland conservation, and accessible COVID relief.

- Farmer engagement
- Develop and strengthen member outreach and engagement strategies for the Coalition’s land campaign, rooting all activities in a strong racial justice analysis.
- Incorporate our land campaign into organizing efforts, including farmer participation in affinity groups; in national events, such as the National Leadership Convergence; and in policy actions, such as DC fly-ins and in-district meetings.
- Identify and support farmer leaders through one-on-one conversations, advocacy trainings, and other forms of engagement.
- Work with the chapter and organizing teams to support our chapter network and at-large members in engaging with land policy, including coordinating land advocacy strategy sessions.
- Respond to farmer inquiries related to land.
- Create resources for our network that help farmers engage in land advocacy.
- Coalition building
- Create and maintain strong organizational partnerships with other grassroots organizations, particularly BIPOC-led partners.
- Work with the policy and organizing teams to build expertise in our network around the land pillar in the Young Farmers policy platform.
- Campaign direction & staff support
- Support the Land Campaign Director in research and messaging related to land issues.
- Support the land campaign accountability work, including gathering feedback from members and partners who engage with our land campaign.
- Help ensure Young Farmer staff are informed and resourced to engage with our land campaign.
A successful candidate will offer:
- Strong familiarity with land-related issues in agriculture, with an emphasis on BIPOC communities.
- At least two years of experience in grassroots organizing, advocacy or a related field.
- A demonstrated commitment to racial equity in the workplace; active engagement in conversations and actions that further racial equity and liberation.
- Strong listening skills and approach to new communities that is humble and accountable, and that builds trust over time with diverse stakeholders.
- Outgoing personality and comfort speaking to individuals and in front of groups.
- Takes initiative to identify and carry out the work that needs to be done.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to travel occasionally (as possible; travel is currently suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic).
An ideal candidate will also:
- Have farming or ranching experience and/or be rooted in an agricultural community (rural or urban).
- Have policy advocacy experience.
- Have language fluency in a second language relevant to agricultural communities.
Schedule and Compensation
- Part-time or full-time position.
- At part time, the Organizer can expect an average of 20 hrs. per week at an hourly compensation rate between $21.59 – 23.75 / hr based on experience according to our organization’s Compensation Guidelines. Weekly hours may increase during periods of travel or around particularly time-intensive events.
- At full time, salary rate is $44,900- 49,400 based on experience according to our organization’s Compensation Guidelines.
- This position is remote.
