In August 2022, USDA announced $300 million in funding for projects dedicated to increasing land access for underserved farmers through the USDA Increasing Land, Capital, and Market Access Program. This historic, one-time funding opportunity directly addressed our land access policy asks and One Million Acres for the Future campaign, providing federal support for community-led land access initiatives benefiting young and BIPOC farmers across the country.
While the timing of the next Farm Bill remains uncertain, we know the change we need, and we can’t let policymakers forget that the time is now for ensuring that the next Farm Bill delivers on land access. The New Producer Economic Security Act–introduced in the Senate by Senator Tina Smith (D-MN) and in the House with bipartisan support by Representatives Nikki Budzinski (D-IL-13), Zach Nunn (R-IA-03), and Joe Courtney (D-CT-02)–would provide USDA with authority and clear direction for a pilot program based on the Land, Capital, and Market Access Program that utilizes cooperative agreements to fund locally-controlled, community-based land, capital, and market access projects. This legislation is an updated version of the Increasing Land Access, Security, and Opportunities (LASO) Act that ensures a path forward for meaningful land access solutions in the next Farm Bill.
Your voices have helped envision and shape this legislation, and now is the moment we need your support to ensure this meaningful step towards equitable land access becomes part of the next Farm Bill. With your support, we can activate our networks to join us in calling on our Members of Congress to support this critical bill.
