Every five years, the National Young Farmers Coalition collects data from farmers in every state through the National Young Farmer Survey. In 2022 we received over 10,000 responses from past, current, and aspiring farmers across the country. The data presents an up-to-date picture of the opportunities and promises of the next generation in agriculture, as well as reveal the urgent structural challenges standing in the way of young farmers’ success.
The 2022 Young Farmer Agenda contains our policy recommendations for the 2023 Farm Bill based on the results of the 2022 survey. With the average U.S. farmer approaching 60 years old and nearly half of U.S. farmland on the brink of changing ownership over the next two decades, creating policy solutions to support this new generation of growers is essential if we are going to achieve food security, healthy communities, and protect natural resources into the future.
