Food Safety Action Page

New food safety rules are on their way, and all farmers, big and small, will be affected.

Right now, we have the opportunity to make sure the FDA gets it right for both farmers and consumers.  The FDA wants to to hear from you – the beginning farmer – on your response to the draft regulations they’ve posted.  And we have only until November 15th to respond!

Act now by joining with NYFC  and National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition on the National Day of Action on October 20th.  Farmers around the country will be gathering together at farms, house parties, and meetings to discuss the rules and write comments to the FDA.  Want to work with us on organizing an event in your area?  Sign up for more info below:

I’m a student in the Food Science and Human Nutrition Department at the University of Maine in Orono. I’m study Maine farmers’ perspectives as far as barriers that they experience in providing their food to feed Maine people, and one of the largest barriers they voiced facing was the “two agricultures” in Maine in terms of food safety regulations. Smaller, more diversified farms experience large barriers in getting their food to Mainers based on food safety regulations that are one-size-fits- all. Consideration of the size of farms and how each regulation affects farmers based on their size and type of food they produce needs to happen in order to move farms of all sizes in Maine forward in their mission to provide safe food for people to eat.
